If your game is glitching, crashing, or showing Last Exception errors, the 50/50 method is the fastest way to pinpoint which mod is causing the problem without checking every single file individually.
When you use many mods, identifying the source of an issue can be difficult. Instead of testing hundreds of files one by one, the 50/50 method uses a simple process of elimination to quickly narrow down the faulty mod.
Why Use the 50/50 Method?
Many players use hundreds or even thousands of mods. Testing them individually would take a huge amount of time.
The 50/50 method works by repeatedly dividing your mod collection in half, testing each group, and following the half that still contains the problem.
Preparation
Before you begin testing, complete these steps:
-
Backup Your Saves: Copy your
Savesfolder to your Desktop. -
Backup Your Mods: Creating a backup allows you to restore your setup quickly.
-
Clear the Cache: Delete the
localthumbcache.packagefile from yourThe Sims 4folder. -
Check Core Mods: Ensure scripts like Smart Core Script or XML Injector are updated.
-
Test on a New Save: Testing on a fresh save helps rule out save corruption.
Step 1: Split Your Mods
Create a temporary folder on your Desktop (for example “Mod Testing”).
Move half of the mods from your Mods folder into this temporary folder.
You now have two groups:
- Mods currently in the game
- Mods in the testing folder
Step 2: Test the First Half
Launch the game with the remaining mods still inside the Mods folder.
If the problem is gone
The broken mod is in the group on your Desktop.
If the problem remains
The broken mod is in the group still in the game.
Step 3: Narrow It Down
Take the group that contains the issue.
- Divide it in half again
- Move one half out of the game
- Test again
Repeat this process until only a few mods remain.
Step 4: Find the Broken Mod
Once only a small number of files remain, test each mod individually until you identify the one causing the issue.
Example
Imagine you have 100 mods:
- Test 50 mods → game works → bad mod is in the other 50
- Test 25 mods → game breaks → bad mod is in those 25
- Test 12 mods → continue narrowing down
After about 6–7 tests, you can find the broken mod.
Tips
Keep Dependencies Together
If a mod requires another script (for example Smart Core), always keep those files together during testing.
Check for Multiple Broken Mods
Sometimes more than one mod is broken. After removing the first problem, test the game again.
Organize Your Mods
Keeping your Mods folder organized by creator or category makes troubleshooting much easier.
Visualizing the Method
The 50/50 method works like a branching tree: you always follow the branch where the problem appears until only one file remains.
